We're not due to depart for the volcanoes until 1.00pm so we decide to take a taxi into Hilo and have a walk round the town and visit the Tsunami Museum.
The museum is a nice, friendly little place lavishly illustrated, with also quite a few words, too. I am not ever so keen on the trend for museums to get very wordy next to exhibits - if I wanted to read about a topic I'd buy a book.
About this time I'm not feeling at my best but we continue to wander around the town centre, but the excursion has to be cut short because the activity is doing me no good at all.
Taxi back then bed - any attempt to move or get up is met with an urgent desire to lie down again. No volcano trip for me, and Val takes very little persuading to go alone.
The rest of the day for me is spent horizontal with eyes closed until Val returned at about 10.30pm.
This is where she went in the park:
The walk out was at twilight time so by the time the party got to the vent into the sea it was dark and the glowing red lava flowing out was quite spectacular and dramatic (I am told).
The walk back over the lava in darkness was a bit hazardous but a slow steady walk was all that was required. The trek out and back totaled about 5 miles - all over uneven lava fields.
Andrew, as mentioned, still in bed on return - assumption made that it may have been sunstroke/exhaustion/dehydration from yesterday.
Feeling a lot better, though, and tomorrow will be just fine.
