Day 16: North Island
Another long day - is there any other sort when we're on holiday?
I'll keep it brief - we headed North from Kona:
- Harbour - Vain attempt to whale watch
- Waimea - Good views up to the summit of Mauna Kea and the
observatories
- One of the older churches in Hawaii, the Imiola Church, build by Rev.
Lorenzo Lyons, who translated many "traditional" hymns into
hawaiian
- Other churches are along this same street in "New England"
style - we were invited for lunch in one of them, which we declined
- Mountain Road to....
- Hawi - vintage looking cinema - wooden front - corrugated iron
building
- Kalahikiola Church - Another older looking church in a very
attractive area
- Kapaa beach - Saw a whale!!! Val was sceptical but soon believed,
even though it was miniscule in the distance. Val also saw a Geeko (large
lizard thing) - she wished she hadn't because it was hiding behind the
toilet seat she was using.
- Puukohola Heiau historic site - A restored site of
cultural/ritual/religious significance.
- Petroglyphs - These were effectively part of the leisure complex at
Waikoloa Beach Resort. It's a smashing walk down to them and they are, to a
large degree, more impressive than the Volcano National Park petroglyphs.
- Sunset - we watched the sun set over
the sea.
Last night in Hawaii so we have dinner at the Kona Inn.
