Day 12: Newport

Haven't quite decided what to do for our day in Newport, which is quite sunny, so will play it by ear a bit. This is how it turned out.

  1. Colonial Newport Walking Tour from Michelin Guide:

Of all of the above, the only thing open to go round was the Synagogue.

The tour was full of the colonial houses - wooden clap board and fancy roof. The tour also included some non-colonial stuff: the Court House, City Hall and some more shops.

  2. Ocean Drive to Brenton Point State Park and Fort Adams, the latter of which gave a view on Newport Bridge and the town.
  3. Marble House Mansion: Having queued for half and hour we eventually got into this place - former home of some of the vanderbilts. Nice Japanese Tea House in the garden.
  4. Coffee House: This was a failed attempt to get a cup of coffee, having chosen the one bit of Newport that doesn't have anywhere that served the stuff.
  5. Brenton State Park for the setting sun.

Had dinner in the hotel - waiter a bit laid back (slow), but was friendly enough.

Settled down in our relocated room which was much bigger and had 5 room lights, but, again, only one easy chair - clearly the management don't want you to stay in your room all night relaxing.
