Day 4 - Cannes

Wednesday 26th February

Anticipating that there is not a great deal to do in Cannes we didn't have an early start, but set off from the Hotel to look at a couple of other Nice sights missed earlier - Notre Dame Basilica and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. We had time to look round both before heading for the Station to catch the 11.20 train to Cannes.
On our way to the station I bought a tin of coke (7Fr) and a tin of orange (8Fr). The significance being, of course, that I bought cans for Cannes costing quinze.

Straight down from Cannes station (more or less) is the Festival Hall which has the Graumann Theatre like hand prints in concrete, of famous stars of the screen, such as Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep and Mickey Mouse (?) many of them French stars unknown outside France and "Art" cinemas. Some wise guy has written on one of them "Roswell 1997" with a six fingered hand.

We headed towards the high bit (Old town), passing the port, the bit where they play boules, and MacDonalds, before getting to the zig-zaggy road that took us up to the viewpoint that is the castle museum. We sat a while in the hot sun, had a drink then set off down again on the other side, mainly on steps instead of roads.

Round by the bus station we stopped for lunch - crepes/gaufres and coffee. I know we're overdoing the crepes a bit, but they are nice and you don't get them in the UK. We then walked along the Boulevard de la Croisette, some of it by the sea, where Val had her traditional paddle and I looked for topless sun bathers and at what the sea had washed up.
Note: The only topless bathers out are the aged hardy types of the swim-in-sea-everyday school, and the only thing of interest washed up was a set of false teeth.
Val reminded me that it is Juan-les-Pins down the road where folks wear their "carefully designed topless swimsuit, where you get an even sun tan, on your back and on your legs"

We walked to the Jardin Alexandre III, then back again (shop/hotel side) to the place where they were playing boules (Allees de la Liberte) where we popped into MacDonalds for a milk shake and sat outside watching the world go by for a while.

A gentle walk, window shopping, along the Rue d'Antibes with the appropriate left turn for the station took us there in time for the 17.30 back to Nice.

We stopped off at the shopping centre to look round en route to the hotel, where we had a short rest before going out for our particularly French meal at Quicks (A sort of poor man's MacDonalds). I had my usual burger without any dressing (called here "au naturelle") and Val had a proper burger.

A short stroll back to the hotel, pausing only so that Val could have an ice cream and I could have a crepe.

Cannes comes between Nice and Monaco on the dog turd meter (with tendency towards Monaco).
